About

My name is Ciero Kilpatrick and I'm a computer science major in Washington, DC. I started growing my interest in the tech world in 2014 when I joined a workforce development program based in IT. From that program, I ended up interning as a QA engineer for an Ed-tech startup. At some point, I wondered about what it would be like to have a different hand in software, and that led me to learning more about User Experience. In 2015, I joined a UX immersive, where I collaborated with professionals from different backgrounds such as graphic design & print media, and it taught me A LOT about the software development process. I gained many skills and learned how to use tools related to UX research and UI design, which led me to intern in UX roles afterwards.During the pandemic, I decided that it would be the best time to pivot and work on becoming a programmer. I decided to pursue a major in Computer Science and up to now, I've learned about data structures and Object-Oriented Programming while using Python and Java, but I still find my experience to be very useful in the opportunities that I come across.

I am currently looking to add more coding projects. Feel free to reach out with good project ideas!

2022 AMIE DESIGN CHALLENGE

The AMIE (Advancing Minorities in Engineering) Annual Design Challenge is a competition that is aligned with AMIE's goal of bringing together corporate and government professionals in engineering with students from ABET accredited HBCU's to increase exposure to knowledge and opportunities in engineering careers. My team and our design came in 1st place. View Project.

2022 AMAZON DESIGN CHALLENGE

The 2022 Amazon Design Challenge featured 17 5-member teams across 16 HBCU colleges and universities, working closely with leaders at Amazon Design, working with a customer in mind to design or redesign a platform, app, or product. The problem statement given this year was “Design an app that strengthens culture and connection through food or an app that counteracts food injustice”. See how my team placed as finalists. 2022 AMAZON NEXT PROJECTS

In August 2022, I was selected to be a part of the Amazon Next Program. The program connects students with Amazon Leaders and teaches participants the importance of Amazon's Leadership Principles, while working on challenging projects that promote collaboration and learning. Extra Curriculars

Udacity Business Analytics Nano Degree

Recently I was awarded a scholarship from the OneTen/BIT Scholarship Program hosted by Udacity and currently taking part in the Business Analytics Nano Degree track. I wanted to take part in this track to learn more about business and data alongside my learning as a Computer Science major. The Nano degree features four projects which require interpreting data and statistics, and teaches information in common spreadsheet controls and formulas, SQL, and Tableau, and how to build dashboards. My last project required reporting insights from data visualizations on malaria cases in Africa between 2000 to 2014.

NASA CAM-STAR Ambassador

This November, I had the opportunity to be a part of a panel to address students focusing in engineering at Jackson-Reed high school in Washington DC and speak to the reasons for becoming an engineer. I encouraged students to find passion and excitement in the projects that they do, encouraged them to place themselves in many opportunities, and to never be discouraged by failure or the lack of recognition, and responded to questions about the importance of diversity in tech, entrepreneurship, and career indecision. It felt great to give back like this.In the Summer of 2022, I became an ambassador for the UDC NASA-CAMSTAR program and acted as a workshop instructor for a week-long Python workshop. This involved creating a one week Python curriculum and presentations for high school students from across the Washington DC area. By the end of the week, workshop participants knew Python basics and could use methods to create a rock paper scissors game, and use Object-Oriented Programming to simulate a bank account experience.

ACM

Currently I am a member of ACM (Association for Computing Machinery), where I am treasurer for ACM-W

Youth Soccer Coach

While studying Computer Science, I work as a Youth Soccer Coach for a small business based in DC. I facilitate soccer related games with kids ages 4 and up, logical concepts of sport, team fundamentals, that develop motor skills and develop social-emotional learning. Ever since beginning during the pandemic it has been it's own reward to help kids develop socially, emotionally, and physically, learning how to overcome new challenges, coming up with plans, facilitating others through those plans, learning how to improvise plans when necessary, and building empathy. During the school year, I mostly work with after-care lessons, and in the summer I work with full-day camps.
